You should use both. A lead can be any contact and no doubt you have numerous ones which never pan out. Once you convert, it becomes an opportunity, this helps maintain your opportunity database and keeps forecasts more accurate.

Zoho only offer the web to lead function, ie. there is no web to opportunity function. Conversion is easy and in one click you can convert to a new contact, company and opportunity.

Forecasts are done only using the opportunity values.

Zoho allows manual or auto approval of leads to keep leads tables manageable.  It also has auto notifications to the owner once ownership is assigned.  Ownership can be manual or rule based.
