How do we avoid importing duplicate data in Zoho CRM?

The professional license does not have a duplicate check feature.  With this in mind the best way to check is to import then order by name (for example), then view in zoho sheet mode and mass delete duplicates.

The enterprise license has more extensive data import features and will check for duplicates.
